Itajaí is a major coastal city in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, situated where the Itajaí-Açu River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most important port and logistics centres in southern Brazil and is also known for fishing, beaches, maritime activities and its strong Portuguese and German cultural influences.

The name should be written Itajaí, with an acute accent on the final í.

Location

Itajaí is located on the north coast of Santa Catarina, in the Vale do Itajaí region.

It is approximately:

  • 90 km north of Florianópolis
  • 10 km from Navegantes
  • 25 km from Balneário Camboriú
  • 30 km from Blumenau
  • 110 km from Joinville

Its strategic location between the Atlantic Ocean and the interior of the Itajaí Valley has shaped virtually every stage of its history.

The municipality covers about 289.2 km².

Population

Itajaí has grown extremely rapidly.

The 2022 Brazilian Census recorded 264,054 inhabitants, making Itajaí the fifth-largest municipality in Santa Catarina at that time. The census showed population growth of approximately 44% compared with 2010.

The latest IBGE estimate listed on its municipal profile is approximately 302,247 inhabitants for 2026.

This dramatic growth reflects the city’s expanding port, logistics, services, tourism, construction and industrial economies.

Itajaí’s history is closely tied to the Itajaí-Açu River.

Historical records describe occupation in the region as early as the 17th century. One of the figures associated with the early settlement was João Dias Arzão, who is traditionally recorded as establishing himself near the mouth of the river in 1658.

During the 18th century, Azorean Portuguese settlers became increasingly important in the region. Later, German immigrants contributed strongly to the development of the Itajaí Valley during the 19th century.

The town was formally established as a district in 1833.

Itajaí achieved municipal status in 1860, with its political-administrative emancipation taking effect on 15 June 1860.

Portuguese and German Heritage

One of the most interesting characteristics of Itajaí is the combination of different European influences.

Portuguese influence

Portuguese and particularly Azorean settlers shaped:

  • fishing
  • maritime traditions
  • food
  • Catholic religious culture
  • coastal architecture
  • local festivals

Fishing became one of the defining economic activities of the city.

German influence

German immigrants arriving during the 19th century contributed to the development of the wider Vale do Itajaí, bringing agricultural, commercial and industrial traditions.

The cultural landscape of modern Itajaí therefore reflects a mixture of Portuguese-Azorean, German and later immigrant influences.

The Port of Itajaí is the defining economic institution of the city.

Commercial navigation existed here from the 19th century, but major modernization occurred during the 20th century.

Technical studies of the port date back to 1905, while construction of major port infrastructure accelerated in the 20th century. The first major concrete quay section was constructed in 1938, and the quay was subsequently expanded during the 1950s.

Originally, the port was strongly associated with wood exports from the interior of Santa Catarina.

As the state’s economy changed, Itajaí diversified into:

  • sugar
  • frozen food
  • containerized cargo
  • general cargo
  • imports
  • exports
  • logistics

Containers eventually became the dominant component of port activity.

Today the Port Complex of Itajaí, which includes port and terminal infrastructure around the mouth of the Itajaí-Açu, is one of Brazil’s major logistics complexes and a particularly important gateway for Santa Catarina’s exporters and importers.

Why the Port Matters

Itajaí’s port gives the city an economic role far beyond its municipal boundaries.

The port connects industries in Santa Catarina with international markets and supports a large ecosystem of:

  • shipping
  • trucking
  • warehousing
  • customs
  • freight forwarding
  • logistics
  • food processing
  • manufacturing
  • maritime services

The municipality also describes the port complex as an important infrastructure for both dry and refrigerated (“reefer”) cargo.

Fishing

Fishing is another defining feature of Itajaí.

The city’s maritime culture goes back centuries, and Itajaí developed a substantial fishing-processing industry.

It has sometimes been called the Brazilian capital of fishing, reflecting the concentration of fishing companies and processing facilities in the municipality.

Fishing also plays a major role in local culture and cuisine.

Although Itajaí is best known economically for its port, it also has a beautiful Atlantic coastline.

Important beaches include:

  • Praia Brava
  • Praia de Cabeçudas
  • Praia de Atalaia
  • Praia do Morcego
  • Praia da Solidão

The municipal tourism authority specifically highlights these beaches and the surrounding hills covered in Atlantic Forest vegetation.

Praia Brava

Praia Brava is particularly well known and has developed into one of the more fashionable coastal areas of the region.

It is popular for:

  • swimming
  • surfing
  • restaurants
  • nightlife
  • beach tourism
  • residential development

Its proximity to Balneário Camboriú has also contributed to rapid real-estate development.

Atalaia Natural Park

Parque Natural Municipal do Atalaia protects an important section of Atlantic Forest near the coast.

The park combines forest, hills and ocean views and is one of the city’s most attractive natural areas.

It provides opportunities for:

  • hiking
  • nature observation
  • photography
  • viewing the coastline
  • environmental education

Bico do Papagaio

One of Itajaí’s recognizable natural landmarks is Bico do Papagaio, a rock formation and viewpoint associated with the Cabeçudas/Atalaia coastal area.

The viewpoint provides striking views over the Atlantic coastline and surrounding hills.

Beira-Rio

The Beira-Rio, along Avenida Ministro Victor Konder, follows the Itajaí-Açu River through the city.

It is one of the most attractive urban areas for experiencing the relationship between the city and its river.

Restaurants, walking areas and views of boats and port activity make the waterfront an important part of Itajaí’s urban identity.

One of Itajaí’s most famous cultural events is Marejada.

It is a major festival celebrating the city’s Portuguese-Azorean heritage and fishing culture, with:

  • seafood
  • music
  • traditional performances
  • cultural events
  • entertainment
  • Portuguese traditions

The municipality describes Marejada as the largest fish festival in Brazil and one of the region’s most important annual events.

Economy

Itajaí has one of the more diversified economies in Santa Catarina.

Major sectors include:

Port and logistics

The port is the backbone of international commerce.

Fishing

Fishing fleets and fish-processing businesses remain important.

Food industry

The city has major activities involving seafood and other food products.

Shipbuilding and maritime industries

The city’s maritime infrastructure has encouraged the development of shipyards and nautical businesses.

Oil and gas

The local economy has also expanded into oil and gas-related services.

Tourism

Beaches, restaurants, festivals and cruise activity contribute increasingly to the economy.

According to IBGE, Itajaí’s GDP per capita was R$182,522.93 in 2023, illustrating the municipality’s considerable economic output.

Tourism

Itajaí offers a combination that is unusual for a Brazilian city of its size:

port + river + beaches + Atlantic Forest + fishing culture + European heritage.

A visitor can experience the city through several different themes:

  • Maritime history
  • Port and riverfront
  • Beaches
  • Surfing
  • Fishing
  • Portuguese-Azorean culture
  • Local seafood
  • Nature
  • Festivals
  • Nearby coastal resorts

The municipality has also invested in cruise tourism infrastructure. Its tourist pier has customs facilities and can accommodate international cruise ships.

Climate

Itajaí has a humid subtropical climate, influenced strongly by the Atlantic Ocean.

The climate generally features:

  • warm and humid summers
  • relatively mild winters
  • rainfall throughout the year
  • high humidity
  • occasional intense rainfall events

Its location on the coast and near river valleys means flooding has historically been an important environmental concern.

Flooding and Natural Hazards

The Itajaí-Açu basin is vulnerable to major flooding.

Because Itajaí sits at the river’s mouth, heavy rainfall throughout the wider valley can produce significant rises in water levels.

Flooding has periodically affected the city and neighboring municipalities. The relationship between the city, the river and flood-management infrastructure is therefore an important part of Itajaí’s modern urban planning.

Education

Itajaí is also an important educational centre for the northern coast of Santa Catarina.

One of the city’s major institutions is the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), a large university with a strong presence in the region.

The university contributes to research and professional education in areas particularly relevant to the local economy, including:

  • maritime studies
  • health
  • business
  • engineering
  • environmental sciences
  • tourism

In Summary

Itajaí is one of the most important maritime cities in southern Brazil. Its identity has been shaped by the meeting of the Itajaí-Açu River and the Atlantic Ocean, first through navigation and fishing, and later through the development of a major modern port and logistics economy.

At the same time, Itajaí is much more than an industrial port. Its Praia Brava and other beaches, Atlantic Forest, historic centre, Portuguese-Azorean traditions, seafood culture and Marejada festival give it a strong tourism and cultural identity. With its population now estimated at more than 300,000, Itajaí is also one of Santa Catarina’s fastest-growing major cities.
