Shahrekord (شهرکرد) is a city in southwestern Iran and the capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. It is famous for its high elevation, cool climate, spectacular Zagros landscapes, Bakhtiari culture, and its proximity to the headwaters of some of Iran’s most important rivers.

It is commonly known as “the Roof of Iran” because of its elevation of roughly 2,070 meters (6,790 ft) above sea level.

1. Quick facts

Topic Information
Persian name شهرکرد
English Shahrekord / Shahr-e Kord
Country Iran
Province Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari
Region Zagros Mountains
Elevation ~2,070 m
Population ~190,000 in the 2016 census
Climate Cold semi-arid / mountainous
Famous for Mountains, Bakhtiari culture, springs, rivers
Nickname Roof of Iran
Major nearby city Isfahan

Shahrekord is about 90 km southwest of Isfahan.

2. Where is Shahrekord?

Shahrekord is located in the central Zagros Mountains of southwestern Iran.

Its high-altitude location gives it a climate very different from cities such as Ahvaz.

The surrounding province is characterized by:

  • High mountains
  • Deep valleys
  • Rivers
  • Springs
  • Waterfalls
  • Alpine-like landscapes
  • Pastoral areas
  • Forests and grasslands

The city itself sits on a relatively high plateau surrounded by the Zagros Mountains.

3. Why is Shahrekord called the “Roof of Iran”?

The main reason is its elevation.

At around 2,070 meters above sea level, Shahrekord is one of Iran’s highest provincial capitals.

This elevation produces:

  • Cold winters
  • Frequent snow
  • Pleasant summers
  • Large day/night temperature differences
  • Mountain scenery

The nickname “Roof of Iran” is therefore primarily geographical rather than symbolic.

The Zagros Mountains dominate the geography of Shahrekord and the surrounding province.

The mountains are important for:

  • Water resources
  • Agriculture
  • Pastoralism
  • Tourism
  • Wildlife
  • Climate
  • Traditional nomadic life

The region contains some of the highest peaks in the Zagros.

5. Zardkuh

One of the most important mountain ranges near Shahrekord is Zardkuh-e Bakhtiari (Zard Kuh).

It is one of the major mountain systems of the Zagros.

The area is famous for:

  • High peaks
  • Snow
  • Springs
  • Glaciers and permanent snowfields
  • Hiking
  • Mountaineering
  • Nomadic landscapes

Zardkuh is particularly important because it contributes to the headwaters of major Iranian rivers.

6. The source of the Karun

The broader Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari region contains the headwaters of the Karun River.

The Karun eventually flows southward through Khuzestan and Ahvaz.

This creates a fascinating geographical connection:

Shahrekord → Zagros Mountains → Karun → Ahvaz → southern Khuzestan

The water that begins in the high mountains around Shahrekord eventually reaches the low, extremely hot environment of Ahvaz.

7. The Zayandeh Rud

The region is also associated with the headwaters of the Zayandeh Rud, one of central Iran’s historically important rivers.

This means Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari is extremely important to Iran’s water geography.

The province’s mountains function as a major water-producing zone between the central Iranian plateau and southwestern Iran.

8. Climate

Shahrekord has a cold mountainous climate.

Compared with most major Iranian cities, its summers are relatively mild.

Summer

  • Warm days
  • Cool nights
  • Low humidity
  • Excellent for outdoor activities

Winter

  • Very cold
  • Snow is common
  • Mountain roads can become difficult

This makes Shahrekord a particularly attractive destination during Iran’s hot summer months.

Winter can be spectacular.

Snow-covered mountains surround the city and temperatures can fall well below freezing.

The surrounding mountains attract people interested in:

  • Snow
  • Skiing
  • Mountaineering
  • Winter photography
  • Mountain trekking

However, winter travel requires attention to road and weather conditions.

10. History

The broader Shahrekord region has a very long human history.

Archaeological evidence from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari indicates ancient settlement and agricultural activity dating back thousands of years.

The region has historically been connected with several major Iranian civilizations and political powers.

However, the modern city of Shahrekord developed much later than some of the ancient settlements in the province.

11. Former name: Deh Kord

The city was historically known as Deh Kord (دهکرد).

The name was officially changed to Shahr-e Kord (شهرکرد) in the 20th century.

The older name sometimes causes confusion because of the word “Kord,” but the city’s modern population should not simply be categorized as Kurdish.

The surrounding region has strong Bakhtiari cultural and linguistic traditions.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the region is Bakhtiari culture.

The Bakhtiari are an important Iranian tribal and cultural group associated primarily with the central and southern Zagros.

Their traditions include:

  • Nomadic pastoralism
  • Seasonal migration
  • Traditional music
  • Oral poetry
  • Distinctive clothing
  • Animal husbandry
  • Carpet weaving
  • Strong tribal traditions

The famous Bakhtiari migration between summer and winter pastures is one of the remarkable examples of traditional nomadic life in Iran.

13. Nomadic migration

Historically, many Bakhtiari families moved between:

Yeylaq — summer pasture

and

Qeshlaq — winter pasture

This seasonal movement allowed communities to use different ecological zones throughout the year.

The migration routes cross some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Zagros.

14. Language

The linguistic situation is diverse.

Languages and varieties found in the province include:

  • Persian
  • Bakhtiari Luri
  • Turkish in some areas
  • other regional varieties

Bakhtiari Luri is particularly important culturally.

Persian is the official language and is dominant in formal education and administration.

The Zaman Khan Bridge is one of the province’s most recognizable landmarks.

It crosses the Zayandeh Rud near Saman.

The combination of:

historic bridge + river + mountains + orchards

makes it one of the most photographed places in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.

20. Kohrang

Kohrang is one of the province’s major nature-tourism areas.

It is associated with:

  • Zardkuh
  • springs
  • waterfalls
  • snow
  • rivers
  • Bakhtiari nomadic culture

For visitors who enjoy hiking and mountain landscapes, Kohrang is arguably more interesting than Shahrekord itself.

21. Sheikh Ali Khan Waterfall

Sheikh Ali Khan Waterfall is one of the better-known natural attractions in the Kohrang area.

It is particularly impressive during spring when snowmelt and precipitation increase water flow.

The surrounding mountain landscape makes it a popular destination for photographers and nature travelers.

22. Kohrang Tunnel

The Kohrang Tunnel is an important water-engineering project.

It was built to transfer water from the Karun basin toward the Zayandeh Rud basin.

The project illustrates how strategically important the mountains of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari are to Iran’s water resources.

23. Agriculture

Despite the mountainous environment, agriculture is important.

Products include:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Pulses
  • Fruits
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts

The province’s valleys and plains provide agricultural land between the mountains.

24. Animal husbandry

Livestock raising has traditionally been extremely important.

Products include:

  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Butter
  • Meat
  • Wool

This is closely connected to Bakhtiari pastoral traditions.

25. Honey

Mountain ecosystems make the region suitable for beekeeping.

Local honey is one of the region’s popular agricultural products.

The diverse mountain flora provides nectar for bees during the warmer months.

26. Local cuisine

Food in the region reflects the combination of Persian and Bakhtiari traditions.

Popular foods include:

  • Bakhtiari kebab
  • Ash
  • Abgoosht
  • Local breads
  • Dairy products
  • Meat-based dishes
  • Mountain herbs

27. Bakhtiari Kebab

Bakhtiari kebab is one of the most famous dishes associated with the region.

It typically combines pieces of meat with chicken or other ingredients and is grilled over charcoal.

Today it is served throughout Iran, so it is not exclusive to Shahrekord.

Nevertheless, eating it in its cultural homeland is part of the regional experience.

28. Handicrafts

Traditional crafts include:

  • Persian carpets
  • Bakhtiari carpets
  • Kilims
  • Jajim
  • Felt products
  • Traditional clothing
  • Woven textiles

Nomadic weaving is particularly important because carpets and textiles historically served both practical and artistic purposes.

29. Population

According to the 2016 Iranian census, Shahrekord had approximately 190,441 inhabitants.

The city has grown substantially during the modern period as it became the administrative and educational center of the province.

30. Universities

Shahrekord is an important educational center for the province.

Major institutions include:

  • Shahrekord University
  • Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences
  • Islamic Azad University
  • other higher-education institutions

The city therefore has a significant student population.

31. Shahrekord and Isfahan

The relationship between Shahrekord and Isfahan is particularly important.

The two cities are only around 90 km apart.

People travel between them for:

  • Employment
  • Education
  • Shopping
  • Healthcare
  • Tourism
  • Business

A combined Isfahan + Shahrekord + Kohrang itinerary is an excellent way to experience both historic urban Iran and the Zagros mountains.

32. Transportation

Shahrekord has:

Shahrekord Airport

Providing air connections, though services are more limited than at major airports such as Tehran or Isfahan.

Road connections

Roads connect the city to:

  • Isfahan
  • Khuzestan
  • Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari towns
  • central Iran

Road travel is particularly important for accessing the surrounding mountain attractions.

33. Why the city is important for Iran’s water system

This is arguably the most important geographical fact about Shahrekord.

The city is located near a region where major rivers begin.

Water from the Zagros mountains feeds systems associated with:

Karun

and

Zayandeh Rud

This gives the province enormous importance for:

  • agriculture
  • drinking water
  • hydroelectricity
  • ecosystems
  • downstream cities

It also means water management in the region can become politically and environmentally sensitive.

34. Shahrekord vs. Ahvaz

These two cities provide an almost perfect geographical contrast.

Shahrekord Ahvaz
High Zagros Lowland Khuzestan
~2,070 m ~20 m
Cold winters Extremely hot summers
Mountain springs Karun River
Bakhtiari culture Arab/Persian/Lur influences
Water source region Downstream river city
Nature tourism Oil & industrial economy

In a sense, Shahrekord is upstream Iran and Ahvaz is downstream Iran.

35. Shahrekord vs. Urmia

Shahrekord Urmia
Central Zagros Northwestern Iran
~2,070 m ~1,330 m
Bakhtiari culture Azerbaijani/Kurdish cultural environment
Mountain springs Lake Urmia
Very mountainous Mountain + lake basin
Cold climate Cold continental climate
Nature tourism Nature + multicultural heritage

36. Shahrekord vs. Piranshahr

Both are mountainous, but their identities differ.

Shahrekord:

🏔️ High-altitude Zagros
🐑 Bakhtiari culture
💧 River headwaters
🌿 Nature tourism

Piranshahr:

🏔️ Northwestern Zagros
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Kurdish culture
🇮🇷🇮🇶 Border commerce
💦 Waterfalls and valleys

37. Best time to visit

🌸 Spring — Excellent

Probably the best season.

Snowmelt produces abundant water and the mountains become green.

☀️ Summer — Excellent

One of the major advantages of Shahrekord is its relatively cool summer climate.

🍂 Autumn — Very good

Beautiful landscapes and pleasant temperatures.

❄️ Winter — For snow lovers

Beautiful but cold, with possible difficult road conditions.

38. Suggested 3-day itinerary

Day 1 — Shahrekord

Shahrekord → Chaleshtar → museums → historical areas → local restaurants

Day 2 — Saman

Saman → Zaman Khan Bridge → Zayandeh Rud → orchards → surrounding villages

Day 3 — Kohrang

Kohrang → Zardkuh → Sheikh Ali Khan Waterfall → mountain landscapes

For a longer trip, add several days for hiking, village visits and exploration of the Bakhtiari region.

39. What makes Shahrekord unique?

The strongest combination is:

🏔️ Extreme elevation + 💧 water sources + 🐑 Bakhtiari culture + 🌿 Zagros nature

It isn’t a city you primarily visit for monumental architecture.

You visit Shahrekord to experience the high Zagros.

The big picture

Shahrekord is essentially a gateway between central Iran and the Zagros Mountains.

Its importance goes far beyond its relatively modest population. The region combines:

Ancient settlement + Zagros mountains + Bakhtiari culture + nomadic traditions + major water sources + agriculture + mountain tourism.

And perhaps the most interesting geographical connection is this:

The cold, high mountains around Shahrekord help produce the water that eventually flows toward places as different as Isfahan and Ahvaz.

So while Ahvaz represents the hot, low-lying downstream environment of Khuzestan, Shahrekord represents the high, cold Zagros environment where much of that water begins.
